about

An indie-folk songwriter with a fine-tuned sense of melody, Brenna’s music conveys a dark spirituality with a maturity and tenderness that belie her position as a relative newcomer on the Austin scene. Underscored by mellow folk-rock orchestration, her characteristically rich voice hits the high notes with ease, while her lower register resonates with an intensity that will captivate your attention. On stage she’s a humble charmer and a rare bird and while this may be the first time you’re hearing her name, it definitely won’t be the last.

She began her musical journey in Central Texas, where she studied sound engineering at Texas State University. Enveloped in a community of musicians, she spent a lot of time sitting around on couches and living room floors listening to impromptu song swaps. Eventually, she picked up the guitar and at the coaxing of friends, began writing songs of her own and performing them locally. In 2008, she won a spot as a finalist in the Kerrville Folk Festival University Songwriter Competition, traveling to Kerrville the following summer to perform in the historic festival’s University Songwriter Showcase.

After graduation, she traveled in search of what came next. A chance encounter at one of her solo shows in a Fort Worth coffee house led to the formation of her first band, Brenna Manzare & the Proper Husbands.

In the year they were together, performing with the outfit afforded her the opportunity to open for the likes of local favorites Telegraph Canyon, Air Review, and Tim DeLaughter of The Polyphonic Spree. She even earned a nomination for best female vocalist in the 2012 Fort Worth Weekly Music Awards. “What You Need,” the song she contributed to the Weekly Awards compilation album, caught the attention of local KXT DJ Paul Slavens, who played it on the radio.

After The Proper Husbands disbanded, Brenna eventually moved to Austin, where she continued to gig solo, swapping her acoustic guitar with a beautiful, black Epiphone Les Paul. “Time” is her first official single release as a solo artist.
